Controlling access to parking facilities is a challenge not only for parking operators but also for urban planners. In high-traffic areas, parking spaces are incredibly valuable—anyone who has ever tried to park within a short walk of the city center can attest to this. Parking solutions must strike a balance among ease of use, revenue generation, and traffic management.

An example of a system that successfully balances these factors is the pay-and-display parking machine. But what exactly is a pay-and-display machine, and why should you consider it? The answer is simple.

Fundamentals of Paid and Display Advertising

Unlike traditional parking meters, pay-and-display machines cover multiple parking spaces. One or two machines can serve an entire row of street parking spaces—or even multiple levels in a multi-story car park. Users pay a set amount and receive a printed ticket showing the expiration time for their designated spot. The ticket is then displayed on the vehicle’s dashboard or windshield wiper, alerting parking enforcement officers to the appropriate time for issuing a citation.

Besides the coin slot, most modern payment and display machines support a variety of payment methods, including credit card payments, cash bills, and even mobile device-based transactions. Some even feature RFID card readers, allowing passholders—such as city vehicles or drivers with disabilities—who don’t need to pay parking fees—to simply swipe their cards and receive a ticket instantly. While these payment and display machines are far more sophisticated than traditional instruments, using them is actually much easier and more intuitive.
